Skowhegan River Park – A year-round outdoor destination in the heart of Maine. Located in downtown Skowhegan, Maine, Skowhegan River Park is an ambitious and transformative project that will turn the Kennebec River gorge into one of New England’s premier outdoor recreation destinations. With construction set to begin soon, the park is designed to offer year-round access to water sports, trail systems, and public riverfront space—all steps from the town’s historic Main Street.
UPDATE (AUGUST 2025): The Skowhegan River Park is officially PERMITTED! After three long years of navigating state and federal environmental permitting, Main Street Skowhegan has secured all necessary permits and is finally ready for construction!
At the core of the park is Maine’s first adjustable whitewater wave, engineered to support activities like kayaking, river surfing, tubing, paddleboarding, and canoeing. By harnessing the natural power of the Kennebec, the park will create a safe, controlled environment for both beginners and experienced paddlers, right in the heart of town.
But Skowhegan River Park goes far beyond the river. The master plan features ADA-accessible river access, scenic boardwalks, terraced seating areas, public art spaces, and multi-season trails for hiking, biking, skiing, and walking. The goal is to make the river gorge a vibrant, inclusive gathering place for residents and visitors alike.
Backed by local leadership and over $4.9 million in funding, the project is also a key part of Skowhegan’s long-term economic revitalization. Early economic impact studies estimate millions in new visitor spending and dozens of new jobs, along with boosts to property values and downtown business activity.
Whether you're an outdoor adventurer or simply seeking a scenic spot to enjoy nature, Skowhegan River Park will soon offer a one-of-a-kind experience where community, recreation, and natural beauty converge.
